It appears that increasingly more designers are attempting their hand on the t-shirt business. I’ve noticed this to be a growing trend during the last several years. There are plenty of incredible t-shirt lines around, and so many apparel companies to compete with, it appears as though an overwhelmingly daunting job for a young designer to get going inside the clothing business. Well not always, if you are taking things a step at one time, produce a plan, and tackle each task with the end goal in mind obtaining your foot inside the door from the t-shirt industry can be easier than you believe.
This is simply not articles to assist you start up a clothing line with all your existing designs. There is certainly lots of info around already for this crowd. This is an article to have an absolute beginner who wants to give Sublimation T-Shirt a go. We’re going to look at how to start with inspiration for the first design, how and where to print it, and a little marketing and self-promo for good measure.
Becoming a designer I’m sure you have worked tirelessly on a task that failed to float your boat. Something which bored you, or a material that simply failed to interest you. It will take the fun away from work. However, once your focusing on a thing that inspires you, suddenly it’s not work on all. It’s an issue that ignites a spark inside you, and you wind up going the extra mile to produce the project incredible.
Keeping that under consideration, you have to locate a theme for this t-shirt design that inspires anyone to make a move great. The theme might be anything from extreme sports to rock music. Anything is fair game.
Once you’ve decided on a theme, do the necessary research to pinpoint the marked audience. Understanding your identiity designing for is important in a killer design. Know whether your audience is female or male, 65 or 25, and what section of the world they are living in. Know very well what they enjoy to put on, what colors, fonts and imagery they may be fascinated by. These are the things you must know and understand before putting pen to paper, or mouse at hand to start out your design.
Since you’ve found your theme so you know specifically who you’re designing for, it’s time to search for a little bit inspiration. That you opt for this inspiration might vary drastically based on your theme. As an example, it could be a trip to the mens area of your nearby sporting good store, it may be browsing online for college style humor, or could be a journey to the cafe where your target market gathers each morning.
Get creative with the inspiration. Ultimately your only as effective as what inspires you, so take the time here, and make a concept that may turn heads and have people talking.
When establishing your file to get started designing there are numerous aspects to consider. How large will the graphic be? Will it be printed on light, colored, or black material? Might it be printed digital or silk screened? If it’s silk screened, the amount of colors will likely be printed? etc…
Build your new document with units set to inches since we’re working in print. 15 inches by 12 inches is often the largest available screen-size when screen-printing. When designing make your amount of colors at 8 or fewer. The greater colors the better the production cost, and a lot screen printers will not be able to handle a lot more than 8 screens.
For digital printing you don’t need to do lots of prep help print. Ink jet printers can print as many colors when necessary, a photograph is fair game. Digital is fantastic for small run jobs, but many likely, you will end up screen printing a t-shirt design. To carry out that you will want to separate your colors into different layers. Screen printing involves printing each color separately, so the printer should access each color inside your design.
In Adobe Photoshop it’s a straightforward question of selecting your colors using the magic wand tool and copying them each for their own layer.
In Adobe Illustrator, it’s a little different, but still just like easy.
The key to color separations in Illustrator is within the Pathfinder palette ( Window | Pathfinder ). Select all things in your design and choose Trim in the Pathfinder palette. This basically removes each of the artwork that may be unseen. Put simply, bits of objects that are behind other objects.
Now select one color with the Magic Wand Tool (Y) and objects of that same color ought to be come selected and select Unite from your Pathfinder palette.
Now, in the Layers palette build a new layer titled Separations, then create Sub Layers for every single color from your design. After that you can copy (Cmd C) that color and Paste in Place in the new layer to move that color to it’s own separate layer.
Upon having all colors moved onto their own layers it is possible to switch off each layer to see the average person colors. This gives the printer to simply access each screen when printing.
Part of marketing and selling your designs is displaying them using product mockups. The advantage of mockups is it permits you to present the design over a shirt well before you do have a printed shirt at hand. You may download the WeGraphics T-shirt Mockups here and here.
For your personal first design is probably not practical or cost-effective to print an inventory to have on hand. Especially since you are not sure what sells could possibly be like for this particular design. Regardless, though, you should be aware of the things printing options are available.
As outlined above probably the most traditional printing for t-shirts is screen printing. This process is amongst the oldest printing methods around, with origins dating to first-century China, 27dexjpky the technology has improved significantly since that time. This method involves dividing the colors in the design in order to be separately.
Digital printing is an excellent way of handling lower run jobs. Some printers will print as low as 5 shirts at a time. This may be excellent if you just need a number of designs available to showcase within a portfolio, or wear out and about. You can find no real color restrictions with digital printing. But, in my view, it doesn’t quite feel similar to a normal screen printed tee.
Before few years on demand printers have begun to spring up on the web. Vendors like CafePress and SpreadShirt. These vendors let you upload your designs, open an internet based store, and have your shirts printed upon order. It is an interesting solution for a one man design shop. Seek information on these vendors, quality and experience may vary in one to another.
